Wow, well I wanted snow, but ice will have to do. Isn't it wonderful the feeling you get when you are reprieved from the everyday agenda! Giddy children, relieved teachers, and moms getting to sleep in for a day or two!. Its a blessing for sure.
We have warped our little loom and actually woven a small project. It was surprisingly easy and fun. We are going to have our first classes very soon. KAL!KAl!! We will be having our first KAL of the year starting week after next. We are giving everyone a chance to come and purchase their yarn, and pick up their pattern. We will meet every other week on Saturday afternoon about 4:15 or so and sit and exchange thoughts on the project. There will be prizes each meeting randomly drawn for participation, and progress. If you have questions regarding the pattern during the week, you may of course come in the shop and we will help you as we can! This is a great way to meet new knitters, and learn a few new techniques. If you have never made a garment this is perfect for your first foray into the garment world! The yarn we are using is made by Berroco, and is a perfect all year round weight for us in the south. Colors are beautiful! we still have a few great colors in stock and will be recieving some new ones this week! Come see and join in the fun! We have a couple of new classes on the schedule. Beginning Hat is one of them. This is a fun class and the pattern is adorable and can be for a man or woman. Its the Wurm Pattern, and it can be made out of Dk, or Worsted and chunky too! Class fee is 55$ for two sessions. You will need to get your supplies at the shop. And the classes will be held on consecutive Saturdays in March. We also are having a Cable class! You will be making a single cable scarf with garter edging. Bella Chenille is the yarn we will be using. It is soft, chunky and gorgeous! The cable looks stunning in it! This is a two session class also, and the class fee is 55$. Cabling is such a beautiful design element, and you will be admired for your startling talent! Come by and see us soon, check out the KAL,weaving and all the ofhter stuff join on at Yarn on Youree. Spring is around the corner, and we have so many plans for the future! We hope you can take the time to be included in the fun! Have a safe wonderful week, and we haop to see your smiling face! In the past several weeks we have had some folks come in who are spinners. One young man brought his wheel to the shop and sat and spun some beautiful lace weight yarn. As he sat and I watched, he moved his feet silently on the two pedals and guided the soft, fluffy wool through the opening and onto the wheel. I thought about the beginnings of yarn, thread and all it takes to make a piece of cloth. What a wonder! I am inspired to do this wonderful craft. Not to the point of not knitting mind you, but to add to my love for fiber. This is not a quick thing to do, but mindful and peaceful. Sitting and focusing on drafting the roving through the orifice of the wheel requires some concentration. Carding the fiber to make your own personal blend is amazing too! We want to be able to share the love of fiber from beginning to end. So, I have ordered an Ashford Joy 2 spinning wheel, and a drum carder to learn about spinning and blending fiber! We welcome all who spin, weave and of course knit and crochet. Linda and I have been so surprised at how many people in our area that spin! So if you know someone, or you spin, bring your wheel and share this beautiful craft with us. We have so much to learn, and it excites me that I am still able to learn!
Speaking of inspiration, I am so proud of all of you that come in and share your finished projects! I have been posting pics of them on Facebook!. Thank all of you for being our customers and allowing us to serve you. Oh my goodness, we have so much coming up in the next months. Weaving is going to begin soon. We are waiting on the stands to come in. There has evidently been a strike somewhere, and so they are sitting somewhere in the Pacific Ocean waiting to be unloaded. We have fresh fiber being sent for spinners. And of course, we have some beautiful new yarns arriving almost daily. If you like knitting Do-Dads we have in the cutest new ones from Puffin and Co. She has made beautiful maple boxes to hold your markers, scissors, darning needles. Gauge finders with little pins with sheep and alpacas on them. These are all handcrafted from Utah! Come see. We will also have new classes listed on the calendar this week. A beginning hat class,How to make cables, and a fabulous scarf felting class that we will let you pick your colors for. This class incorporates silk scarfs with the felted yarn! If you love one of a kind scarves you will not want to miss this class! For beginning knitters who have had their first two classes, the Hat class is awesome! You will continue to learn how to use your knitting skills to make a hat and knit in the round! Cables,Cable,Cables... Oh they look so beautiful entwined and twisted in beautiful yarns! The technique is amazingly simple, and we will have a two session class on a single cable scarf! This is low stress too:) Our Two at a Time sock class has started and we all survived the first class! Dont give up, slow and steady wins the two socks! We hope to see you this week, get out and enjoy this beautiful weather! Bring some knitting, crochet, or spinning to the shop and visit with us! Heck, bring your lunch and spend the afternoon with us! We love seeing you and catching your inspiration! Love to you all! Knit on! Penny and Linda ![]() We have our beautiful Ashford looms in! They are a warm smooth maple. Rigid heddle weaving is coming to Yarn on Youree! As soon as we recieve the stands our classes will begin. We will make a project, either a scarf or dish towel. There will be a couple of yarns to choose from. It will be a two day class. Saturday and Sunday, approximately 3-4 hours per day. You will warp the loom and weave. There will be a good bit of written material that you will be able to review at home. This will be hands on, and there can only be 4 in this class. We already have a waiting list for 12 people. I will be conducting the classes twice a month, every other weekend. Im so excited to be introducing this to our area from our shop. I love learning something new, I think knowledge keeps us happy, and invested in life. Now, know this I am no expert and I am new to this as well. I am going to do my best to teach basic weaving. This week a young man came in with this fabulous sock. We sat and visited with him for awhile, and found out that he is a self taught knitter, and spinner. He is a student at Centenary College training to become a teacher. Every day it seems we meet such gifted and talented people. Linda and I want each and every one of them to feel welcome and wanted in our shop. Josh is this young mans name, and he has inspired us to push our knitting skills further, and maybe even spin! He has a drop spindle and we watched him yesterday spin some gorgeous fiber into fingering weight yarn. He is going to bring his wheel in soon and just spin. Drop into the shop if you haven't already we have the most fascinating and fun people coming in!
Our new Ashford looms are on the truck and headed our way!. We have 4 28inch knitters looms that we are going to be teaching weaving on. This is very exciting and a wonderful way to use the beautiful yarn that some of us ;) have stashed. AND how fun would it be to spin your own yarn and knit or weave with that! Thats a possibility that we are mulling around. Spinning might be next. We have so many fun things happening, and can't wait to get started! Sunday night we will have Downtown Abbey night from 6:30 or so until 8:00, bring a snack if you would like, but more importantly show up and knit with us! Its a great fun time for laughter and fellowship! Hope you weekend is filled with laughter, warmth, good food and lots of knitting!! Come see us on Youree dr! I love this time of year. Everything is in a state of hope. Hope for the flowers to bloom again, the trees to green up, the temps to warm, the longer days to return, ideas to grow and come to life, chances for better understanding. All of these things are based on hope! Our culture tells us that once a year (New Years) we can make resolutions, come to new understandings, set goals, throw off the old and welcome the new. I think we can do this everyday..New day is everyday for us, we don't have to wait 365 days until we can start new again. Isn't God awesome to us? Just thinking of all the opportunities we have every day, every moment to change and improve who we are, and our surroundings. Inspiration is everywhere isn't it? Look at nature how she changes her colors, and textures. If you are bored with the status quo of fashion that we are fed, change it up! Just for yourself! Look at the colors in nature and how they are contrasted. Not in a planned garden but in a field,or a waterway,or an orchard something thats not maintained by us. If you love the colors of spring flowers, knit yourself something in those tones. Don't let what is dictated to you by what is fashionable or acceptable dampen your desire to make something for yourself thats outside the box. Knit up some fingerless mitts in some wild hand painted yarn, socks in a neon bright color! And wear them! How wonderful does it feel to wake up to a clear blue sky after days of grayness?Kind of like having dessert first! Go ahead and eat that cupcake, indulge yourself in color. Wear it! Its feels so good knitting with bright colors, silky fibers, and then wearing it! It draws attention! The good kind! Free yourself from the idea of being subtle, reserved, conservative ( at least in color). We need to see the color! When you walk into our shop I hope you see and enjoy the beautiful colors and textures of yarn. It draws you in doesn't it? Go for it! Get the color and experience the jolt of happiness that just one ball can give you! Slippers, mitts, a hat , a small scarf, a pompom on the ends of your scarf, knit or crochet a flower and wear it on your shoulder. Color is our visual form of hope! Use it every day.
I find myself looking for new ways to incorporate fiber into my life. Right now Im very drawn to weaving. We are going to start weaving classes in March. Simple projects to begin with, learning about the loom, how to calculate how much yarn you will need for your project, color choice and so much more that will allow you to use yarn in a different way. You will never look at your stash in the same way again! Weaving is an ancient art, the Bible speaks of it often. God wove us! Its so satisfying that a little of this an a little of that can be made into something unforgettable, timeless, and so visually appealing. I hope you can joint us for some classes and try this experience. Class size will be limited to 4 at a time. We will have four looms, maybe more depending on response to these initial classes. Class sign up is at the shop, and cost will be $50 for four classes. Valentines Day is coming up soon, we will have all pink and red yarn on sale 14% off in honor of this day of love! Souper Bowl party is February 1! From 6-9pm, we will be eating soup, snacks, and watching Downtown Abbey! Escape the football and come laugh and enjoy the english version of As the World Turns! Looking forward to the next moment, day, month and year! See you at the shop! ![]() We have classes scheduled!! If you love classes and are ready to learn new techniques, look at our calendar, and choose a class! There is a "duffer" class starting on January 17, that is fun! We just received a brand new shipment of wool from Brown Sheep! Beautiful colors and great texture. The felting technique is so much fun to learn! It's easy and fun to watch the wool change from yarn into a beautiful solid fabric! Its a chameleon for sure! What a wonderful gift it is for us to use. Once you learn how easy it is to knit or crochet a pattern and then add a little hot water and wala!! You have a whole piece of fabric that can be manipulated into just about anything you can think of! Shoes,purses,bowls,jackets,hats,jewelry,covers.. just to name a few...And it can be decorated on top of that!!! Agh!! Overload!!! Did you hear the warning tone going off in my head?? That's what happens when I think of all the things I can do with felted items! That's what creativity is all about, its what YOU can imagine. Don't be put off by thinking you can only do whats been done, do what is in your mind! Classes are also a way to connect with people you haven't met. Sharing in learning something is one of the most rewarding things in this world. Class sizes are limited, usually 6 is the limit for this felting class. Call the shop and get your name on the list, you can pay when you come in, but be sure and pick your colors for your project fairly soon, as we don't have more than five of each color!. See you soon, and have a wonderful weekend, Linda and I will be heading to Phoenix this friday for our first TNNA convention. This is one of the years largest Needle arts conventions for retailers. We are excited to see and learn what is new and exciting for the knit and crochet community. Penny and Linda ![]() Ok, Youngin's,if you don't know why they call the day after Thanksgiving Black friday Im fixin'to tell you. It's because all year long stores operate at a loss, meaning in the red, and on this day(friday)they finally get back in the black! Or at profit level!!! Yay!!!! Now let me assure those of you who are worried about us having a sale already! We are fine and dandy! We will be having sales occasionally to keep the flow of cool new yarn coming in and the not as cool yarn going out! I don't really think theres any not cool yarn, but just saying...soooo... If you have seen something that tickles your needles but didn't quite want to make the 100% commitment ,well honey heres your shot to take it home at 28% off!!!!! For those of you who are math challenged that means that if the item is 35$ you multiply 35$ by 28%,then subtract that amount from 35$!!!! Walah!!!! I know Im brilliant;)...ok, jk, Now Ill see you folks tomorrow bright and early!! Love, knits and no knots! We hear these words on a daily basis, they are part of our chatter with each other. In my personal day to day life I am all these words and more. I wonder though if we are more thankful for whatever, when we have been without or when we have had the something and then had it taken away? This week my sweet daughter lost her cat due to leukemia. It was heartbreaking to say the least watching her suffer this loss. I too have lost pets, friends and a child. The pain is like no other. Jennifer related to me that if God truly loved her He would not have taken Luna from her. I wanted to say so many things to her, to assure her that that wasn't the case at all. But, I remember how during these times no words can help the crushing hurt of loss. I think that we truly learn thankfulness, gratitude, happiness, contentedness, peace when we go through pain and then come out on the other side in the sunlight. Im not saying that we don't appreciate things we have but Im saying that I believe true thankfulness comes through pain, and then healing. We all live in a world that was wrought through pain, suffering and healing. As we age the joys of life seem to get further apart but are sweeter than ever. I want you all to know that when I see you and you share your joys and successes or your sadness, and disappointments I know that I have indeed been blessed with the opportunity of Yarn on Youree. I pray your life will be filled with thankfulness, and the gift of healing, more love than you can imagine, and the opportunity to give to others in their time of need. Happy Thanksgiving to all of you!
